Traction Control Systems are used to prevent wheel spin from occurring due to acceleration. This usually happens on a slippery surface, such as snow, ice, or a pool of water, where the wheels are not able to generate enough traction to move the vehicle. Traction Control systems and Antilock braking systems (ABS) are often paired together as they help improve the vehicle’s stability by working in tandem. The major difference between an ABS and a Traction Control system is that while ABS stops the wheel from spinning while braking, Traction Control stops the wheel from spinning while the vehicle is accelerating.
Traction Control Systems use wheel speed sensors to detect whether there is any slippage occuring between the tire and the road. When these wheel speed sensors get dirty or damaged they can stop working; this prohibits the traction control module from knowning when to enable the system.
The Traction Control Module can also malfunction and break, causing the system to stop working.
If your Traction Control System warning light comes on and stays on, it is best to have the issue investigated as soon as posible. Stop by Southside Tire and Auto or give us a call at 218-326-0363 and let our expert technicians inspect and diagnose the problem.
